In the summer of 1899, Fred and Cora Krebs started serving meals to their neighbors, board being $8.00 per week, three meals a day, dinner was 50 cents. Mrs. Krebs was a school teacher and a part-time caterer and Mr. Krebs was a store keeper. From this small beginning has grown one of the most well known and respected restaurants in the industry. Located in the village of Skaneateles, on the north end of Skaneateles Lake, eastern gateway to the picturesque Finger Lakes, the Krebs is on Route 20, just 17 miles west of Interstate 81. The restaurant itself, which originally seated 25, has been added to until the dining room seats 150. The restaurant is furnished throughout with antiques, the tables covered with linen table cloths, adorned with fresh flowers from the Krebs' own formal English garden, the windows covered with lace curtains. In 1946, the upstairs, where Mr. and Mrs. Krebs had their living quarters, was converted into a cocktail lounge and sitting rooms. In keeping with the decor, the cocktail lounge is furnished with Early American Tavern Furniture. Every effort has been made to keep the restaurant the way you would have found it in the early 1900's. There are no menus used at The Krebs - instead we feature our traditional meal which includes a first course (fresh fruit cup, tomato juice, shrimp cocktail, melon), a choice of soup (clear broth or creamed soup), lobster a la Newburg, (made from Mrs. Kreb's secret recipe), English sliced roast prime rib, pan fried half broilers of chicken, white potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, fresh seasonal vegetable, beef gravy, creamed mushrooms and toast points, sweet rolls, and a choice of homemade desserts and ice creams. Also included are a choice of salads, relishes, homemade bread and rolls, and a platter of homemade brownies and angel food cake accompanies all desserts. Two smaller meals are also offered to those who feel they cannot do justice to a full seven course meal. The format of these two meals is basically the same as the traditional meal but slightly abbreviated to please the lighter appetite. One features the lobster a la Newburg, served with a side of wild rice, and the other, the prime rib and chicken entrees. A children's menu is also available. Vegetables and desserts change with the season and availability. All food is prepared on the premises, the emphasis being placed on quality, there being no substitute for the real thing. The Krebs Original Sunday Brunch is served every Sunday during the season and consists of a choice of first course, (fresh fruit, juices, and melon in season), choice of cereal or French Onion soup, creamed chicken and baking powder biscuits, scrambled eggs and sausage, roast beef hash, sweet rolls, muffins and hot pop-overs. There are homemade jams or jellies on the table and coffee is served constantly. To top off the brunch there are waffles served with hot maple syrup and sherbet. The season runs from the first Saturday in May to the Last Saturday in October. Weekdays the cocktail lounge opens at four and dinner is served from six, Sunday brunch is served from 10:30 until 2:00 and dinner is served from four, the cocktail lounge opens at noon. Reservations are appreciated. |
